A Dolphin Safari project is proposed in Jharkhand, boosting tourism

It is probable that Jharkhand will soon be home to two new ecotourism spots. Sahibganj along with Rajmahal are two places that are ideal for tourism with dolphins. The purpose of this is to save the threatened Ganges river dolphins as well as to increase tourism in the region.

The sections that are designated in the project include Singhi Dalan in Rajmahal and Ojha Toli in Sahibganj, an overall 40km distance between the two sites.

This initiative is vital due to one important reason: the issue of poaching and non-scientific fishing that has resulted in a constant reduction in the numbers of Ganges river dolphins. The species is native to their native Indian subcontinent, the Ganges river dolphins can be given better protection if the areas are designated as a protected zone.

According to the study conducted in the Ganga stretch of the state of Uttar Pradesh by the Wildlife Institute of India, there were 81 dolphins on the water. However, experts are of the view that their numbers could be in the range of 130-135. Because of the dimensions that the river is, obtaining an exact count may not be achievable.

It is believed that the presence of Ganges dolphins living in the region offers opportunities for ecotourism in the area. If all goes as planned it could become the second reserve zone to protect dolphins within India. The primary and sole one can be found in the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary located in Bihar.
