A popular tourist attraction in Bagh is the Bagh Caves, which date back to the late 4th to the early 6th century and are located in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district. It is a popular tourist destination due to the Buddhist murals in the rock-cut chambers of the caves. However, apart from that, Bagh rarely appears on our travel plans from a tourist perspective. However, that may change in the near future.
It’s much older than the Buddhist caves in Bagh, much older. Among the fossils we found in Bagh were dinosaurs, sharks, giant gymnosperms, and prehistoric sharks. It turns out that Bagh is a treasure trove of dinosaur fossils dating from 100.5 to 60 million years ago.
UNESCO has approved a dossier for the designation of a global geopark by geologists and paleontologists to protect the site, increase tourism, involve local populations, and raise awareness to protect the area’s millions-year-old history.
The fossils are literally strewn all over Bagh, and if Bagh receives recognition from UNESCO, it will become India’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. Bagh’s geological history is so rich and abundant that for years, the locals ignored them.
There is no doubt that Bagh fulfills all the requirements to be recognized by UNESCO and I am sure that by next year, India will have its first Global Geopark recognized by UNESCO.
As well as perfectly preserved dinosaur eggs and fossilized remains of carnivorous dinosaurs and herbivorous dinosaurs, there are also fossilized remains of several feet long sharks and other rare marine animals, as well as basaltic columns that are found all over the world. We were able to locate dinosaur fossils at the Bagh Museum in 2011, and in 2011, we were able to establish the Dinosaur Fossil National Park. Now we are awaiting UNESCO recognition.
