Bhutan to host world's toughest ultramarathon, Snowman Race

Bhutan is all set to host the Snowman Race, one of the most challenging ultramarathons. Bhutan will host this event on October 13 and 17.

The competition will feature 29 endurance athletes, and nine Bhutanese runners, who will compete for more than 203 km over five days at an oxygen-sparse average of 14,800 ft with the highest point at 17,946 ft. Few people have completed the trial, which takes 20-25 days.

As far as reports are concerned, the race is part of His Majesty’s initiative to raise awareness about climate change. The event will highlight the impacts of global warming, particularly on the most threatened ecosystems on earth, such as those in the high Himalayas.

The event will conclude with a virtual climate conclave held the very next day following the final day of the race. Ambassador Kesang Wangdi, Chairperson of the Snowman Race Board, said Bhutan has always championed climate change and has raised global awareness for this cause.

He also said, “This run is symbolic of the challenges we have ahead. Our planet and all of its inhabitants will be determined by the next few years. this is a small step in the direction we all need to move in, together, before we run out of time, to protect our natural environment,” he said.

According to reports, athletes will come from the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, France, Germany, Singapore, Tanzania, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as nine from Bhutan.

Riders will traverse some of Bhutan’s most beautiful areas, including the remote Lunana area, on the Snowman Trail, Bhutan’s most challenging trekking route. Runners will also traverse Gangkhar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.
