The central government of India has announced a new initiative, the Vibrant Village Programme, to boost rural tourism. The initiative aims to develop 663 villages in the first phase, focusing on better connectivity and facilities for tourists. As part of this scheme, 17 border villages located in Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh have been selected for development into tourism sites.
The government’s focus on developing border villages as tourist sites are aimed at attracting more visitors to these areas, promoting adventure tourism, and enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in remote regions. The 17 selected villages will serve as a pilot project for the overall scheme, with adventure tourism and homestays identified as the primary focus areas for development.
The 17 Border Villages Selected for Development
The border villages selected for development include Chushul and Korzok in Ladakh; Gipu, Lalung, and Charang Khas in Himachal Pradesh; Niti, Mana, Malari, and Gunji in Uttarakhand; Lachen, Gnathang, and Lachung in Sikkim; Zemithang, Tuting, Taksing, Chayangtajo, and Kibithoo in Arunachal Pradesh. These villages are known for their natural beauty, scenic landscapes, and cultural heritage.
The government plans to develop these villages by providing better connectivity, creating trekking routes, and facilitating adventure sports activities such as ice skating, river rafting, and skiing. Additionally, the government will construct and restructure homestays in these villages to provide comfortable accommodations for tourists.
Development of Trekking Routes and Adventure Sports Activities

Similarly, adventure sports such as ice skating, river rafting, skiing, and more will be developed in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. The government will ensure the safety of tourists by setting up proper guidelines and safety measures.
