World’s Highest Bridge for Railways The Chenab Bridge:
Chenab Railway Bridge is currently being built in the context of the Kashmir Railway project got its Golden Joint on the 14th of August 2022.
On the 14th of August, it was the day that the Indian Railways announced the inauguration of Chenab Bridge’s Golden Joint.
This Golden Joint of a Bridge is the part that connects two sides of the deck that makes up the bridge. When it is completed stage of construction, it is expected to become it will be the World’s Highest Railway Bridge connecting Katra to Banihal.
When it is completed, the bridge will be higher by 35 meters than the Eiffel tower and will play a vital role in the network of railway connectivity being built throughout the Kashmir Valley.
Chenab Bridge: World’s Highest Railway Bridge Fact File
It is the Highest Railway Bridge in the world and is known as”the Chenab Railway Bridge, which is 1,315 meters long. The bridge will be part of the crucial link in the 111-km stretch from Katra to Banihal, which is being developed as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla section of the Kashmir Railway Project.
This bridge forms part of the 272-kilometer railway line that is in the process of being constructed, starting from Udhampur through Baramulla. The railway project is formally known as the ‘Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project’, and it will provide an all-weather highspeed connectivity option between Jammu with the Kashmir valley.
Construction of the Chenab Railway bridge started in 2004. However, it was suspended in 2008-09 to ensure security aspects for the bridge. The frequent high-speed winds that travel through this region could have caused danger to the rail travellers, and after confirming that, work was reopened under the direction of Afcons.
More than 1300 workers and 300 engineers have been engaged in this Chenab Railway Bridge project, and the project is close to the 98% mark of the way to completion.
When it is completed, once completed, Chenab Railway Bridge will be the highest bridge in the world, 359m higher than the level of the riverbed. This remarkable distinction will allow the bridge to be 35m higher than the famous Eiffel Tower that is located in Paris.
The Chenab Railway Bridge’s arch is an unusual structure. It is made up of rectangular boxes that weigh 10,619 tonnes.
The unique design and construction of the World’s Highest Railway Bridge allow it to endure high wind speeds of up to 266 Km/Hour.
In the construction of the bridge, 28,660 tonnes of steel fabrication were performed by the workers. They also had 10 Lakh Cum earthwork, 6,600 Cum Concrete, and 26 km motorable roads.
According to the figures released by the Central Government, the total cost of construction of the Chenab Railway Bridge stands at 1,486 crores.
