A Mahakal Lok corridor was inaugurated at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Approximately INR 850 crore will be invested in the first phase of the Mahakaleshwar Temple Corridor Development Project. In addition, he performed puja at the famous temple dedicated to Lord Mahakal.

#1. This is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples in the country. It is located in the city of Ujjain and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

#2. The newly built corridor inside Mahakaleshwar Temple is more than 900 meters long and has been named Mahakal Lok. The corridor is decorated with 108 ornate sandstone columns arranged in a row. Each column carries a decorative design of a Trishul on top, as well as Lord Shiva’s mudras, which can also be seen on the columns.

#3. There have been numerous structures constructed along the corridor that have been constructed with sandstones from the Bansi Paharpur area of Rajasthan that have been used for construction. Artists and craftsmen from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Odisha chisel and embellish raw stones to create aesthetic pillars and panels.

#4. As part of the redevelopment plan, efforts will be made in order to beautify, expand, and decongest Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple and its surrounding area as per the redevelopment plan.

#5. The Ujjain-based Jyotirlinga temple grounds are expected to be expanded from their original 2.82 hectares to 47 hectares, and a 17-hectare lake is also slated to be included in this expansion, which will encompass the original 2.82 hectares of the temple grounds.

#6. Further reports state that around INR 856 crore has been spent on the development of the corridor leading to Mahakaleshwar temple. There are 53 illuminated murals depicting stories from the Shiva Purana along the corridor.

#7. According to reports, the government also plans to build a pilgrimage center and a facility center for devotees and pilgrims with an estimated budget of INR 23,90 crores.

#8. As a matter of fact, according to the reports, it is estimated that the redevelopment of the Mahakaleshwar corridor is three times larger than the redevelopment of the premises of the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
