The History behind tourism day in India
We are not sure how this day originated. However, back in 1948, a tourism committee was made named the Tourist Traffic Committee for the growth of the tourism industry. The base office was set up in Delhi and Mumbai.
And two more offices in Chennai and Kolkata in 1951. Further in 1958, for the stagnant growth of tourism, a special department was established by the Ministry of tourism and communication.
Importance of Tourism day
The tourism industry has great importance in India. So, national tourism day has an immense role in Indian society. By celebrating this day, people highlight India’s prominent role in tourism in the world.
Every corner and state of India has various major tourist attractions based on their culture and sightseeing.

2023 Theme of National tourism day
The government takes a lot of initiatives to celebrate tourism day globally. Every year a new and meaningful theme is set.
In 2023, the national tourism day will have a “Dekho Apna Desh” theme, which means look at your diverse county.
However, the COVID pandemic has affected tourism this year. Whereas, the tourism ministry is taking various steps to reignite the growth. Various seminars have been launched from January 21 to February 22.
On this famous tourism day, let’s have a look at some unseen facts about Indian tourism;
- The tourism industry has employed around 23.5 million people. The growth rate is increasing at 7.9% of the rate. It will be the rapidly growing sector in this decade.
- India’s famous and biggest Kumbh Mela has encountered the biggest gathering of people from 75 million pilgrims. Even you could witness the gathering from space.
- Based on the 2019 report, India has encountered over 18 million global tourists. However, back in 2018, the number was 17 million travelers.
- The tourism sector has contributed approximately $247 billion to India’s GDP. It is quite a huge number. However, this ratio seems to rise to $512 by the end of 2029.
- India is land diverse with 38 world heritage locations.
