A recent development has resulted in the temporary suspension of the Amarnath Yatra due to inclement weather. It has been reported that pilgrims will not be allowed to move towards the revered cave from either Pahalgam or Baltal camps.
To reach the cave shrine via the shorter Baltal route requires a 14 km trek, whereas those using the more traditional Pahalgam route must trek 48 km for four days.
Due to heavy rains, the authorities suspended the yatra and added that it will be resumed only when the weather improves.
A massive cloudburst on July 8 caused the yatra to be stopped earlier in the month after heavy rainfall on July 5. More than 30 people are still missing and 16 people have lost their lives. Nevertheless, the yatra was then completed through the Baltal route via the Pahalgam route.
As of Thursday, another batch of 5449 pilgrims had left Jammu for the valley, according to reports of over 1.44 lakh pilgrims partaking in the Amarnath Yatra.
According to the officials, the devotees offered their prayers in the cave shrine in spite of the three-day halt caused by flash floods near the cave shrine due to heavy rain on July 8.
According to the schedule, this year’s Amarnath Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus, will end on August 11 in conjunction with Raksha Bandhan, which falls on Shravan Purnima.
