Delhi’s IGI airport became the second busiest airport in the world by total seat capacity and frequency of domestic and international flights by March 2022, according to the Official Airline Guide (OAG), a global leader in travel data.
Since the COVID-related travel restrictions took effect two years ago, India’s civil aviation industry has slowly started showing signs of recovery this year.
The airport handled around 31.65 million domestic passengers and 5.49 million international passengers in CY 2021, according to media reports. Furthermore, in the years 2020 and 2021, the airport ranked third among all Indian airports in handling international as well as domestic passenger traffic.
It has been reported that Delhi International Airport, which has a seating capacity of 3,611,181, overtook Dubai International Airport, which has a seating capacity of 3,554,527.
A report by the OAG finds that while Atlanta retained its position as the largest airport, Dubai dropped to second place after Delhi International Airport, which has a capacity of 3,611,181 seats.
Furthermore, the report stated that in March this year, the airport handled 3.61 million passengers, which is an improvement from 23rd place in March 2019 before the pandemic hit.
According to the airport’s website, 67,311,016 passengers passed through the airport in 2019, while 28,500,545 passengers entered in 2020, which was a decrease caused by pandemic restrictions.
