From early next year, India’s longest river cruise service will begin between Varanasi and Bogibeel. Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal says the cruise service will travel over 4000 kilometers across the Ganga, Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR), and the Brahmaputra.
It has been revealed that the said route will provide new opportunities for Assam people to use inland waterways. This will also promote their livelihood and trade in tourism and cargo transportation, as the Minister spoke after the launch of multiple projects for Bogibeel’s development.
Following the plan, two floating jetties are being constructed at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh district and Guijan in Tinsukia district. In contrast, both jetties are being built by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) along the National Waterways – 2 (NW-2) or River Brahmaputra.
It has also been announced that Coastal Consolidated Structures Pvt. has been awarded the work. As part of an EPC contract (engineering, procurement, construction). It is also stated that the two jetties are estimated to cost INR 8.25 crore and are scheduled for completion by February 2023.
In addition, Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Limited and Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation are also planning to establish a permanent cargo terminal at Bogibeel for hassle-free cargo transportation.
