India drops 8th ranks in Tourism index but remains the top Destination for South Asia

In a travel and tourism development index published by the World Travel & Tourism Council, India dropped eight ranks to 54 from 46 in 2019 but remains on top within South Asia.

The biennial World Economic Forum study of tourism and travel highlighted a growing sector following the pandemic’s lows.

Japan has been at the top of the global charts, followed by the US, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, the UK, Singapore, and Italy among the top 10.

The biennial World Economic Forum travel and tourism report also indicated a growing sector following lower levels of the pandemic, however, the pace of recovery is not always smooth and there are still challenges.

The Travel and Tourism Development Index examines 117 countries and identifies crucial factors that contribute to the sustainable and long-lasting growth of the tourism and travel economies.

“COVID-19 shutdowns have re-emphasized the important contribution travel and tourism make to many economies around the world,” Lauren Uppink the Head of Aviation, Travel, and Tourism at the World Economic Forum said.

“As the world emerges from the pandemic, economies must invest in building a strong and resilient environment to deliver the travel and tourism experience and services for many decades to come,” Ms. Uppink concluded.

The Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 is an evolution from the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index that has been released annually for the last 15 years. WEF said.
