India has begun an entire 75-day campaign called “Swachch Sagar Surakshit Sagar”, which aims to scrub 75 beaches along the country’s coastline. According to the central office, the massive cleanup campaign is a massive celebration that is part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration, marking the 75th anniversary of Independence. The event has 75 volunteers to clean beaches at each mile along the 7500-kilometer in length Indian coastline.
According to reports, in the last month of the UN ocean conference held in Lisbon, Portugal, India pledged to protect 30 percent of its oceans’ water bodies and lands by 2030 in a gradual way. Following the event, India declared that they would launch a clean awareness campaign along the vast coastline in the task context.
This cleanup initiative is increasing awareness about the plastic pollution in ocean water that has become a menace for marine species. Numerous studies have shown that the use of plastics creates more than 50% of ocean waste, which harms the marine ecosystem, human health, and the economy. In particular, during the monsoon season, India witnessed enormous microplastics along the coast.
This initiative was launched by the Indian Coast Guard, Environment Ministry, National Disaster Management Authority, Akhil Vidyarthi Parishad, Students for development, and other organizations. In the words of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, this campaign is expected to bring about an unprecedented change in the population’s behavior, which can contribute to enormous conservation of the environment. The Ministry has also proposed three primary goals of the campaign: to consume wisely, dispose of garbage with care, and sort out biodegradable and nonbiodegradable garbage at home.
This huge step is an aspect of India’s battle against plastic, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls for the complete limited usage of plastic as part of an effort to gradually reduce plastic use. Regarding that, on July 1st, 2022, India prohibited the nation’s manufacturing, use, or distribution of all plastics.
The massive beach cleaning campaign started on July 3rd, 2022. The campaign will reach its target on September 17th, which is known as International Coastal Clean-up Day and coincidentally is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
