Indian Railways, one of the world’s largest railway networks, has announced a fare reduction for AC-3 tier economy class tickets beginning Wednesday. The move is expected to benefit a large number of passengers who travel in AC-3 tier economy class coaches and make train travel more affordable for them.
Introduction
The Indian Railways is the lifeline of India’s transportation system and the backbone of the country’s economy. It is also the world’s second-largest railway network, spanning over 68,000 km and connecting more than 7,000 stations across the country. With a daily average of around 23 million passengers, the Indian Railways is one of the most used modes of transportation in India.
The Fare Reduction
According to the Ministry of Railways’ order, the fare for a 3-tier economy class ticket has been reduced, which was previously made equal to the fare for an AC-3 tier ticket via a circular last year. The reduction in fare is a significant move, as the AC-3 tier economy class is one of the most widely used classes on Indian Railways. The fare reduction is aimed at making train travel more affordable and accessible for passengers.
The Introduction of Three-Tier Economy Coaches
The Railway Board introduced three-tier economy coaches to provide passengers with the ‘Best and Cheapest AC Travel’ service. These coaches cost 6-7% less than the standard AC 3-tier fare. The three-tier economy coaches have proven to be a hit with passengers, and the Railways have seen a significant increase in revenue from this class since its introduction.
Comparison between AC 3 Tier Coach and AC 3 Tier Economy Coach
It is worth noting here that an AC 3 tier coach has 72 berths, while an AC 3 tier economy has 83 berths, according to officials. This means that more passengers can travel in the AC-3 tier economy class, making it a popular choice for long-distance travel.
AC-3 compartments have a total of 6 berths, including 2 side berths, but there is no middle berth between the side upper and side lower berths.
On the other hand, AC-3 Economy compartments have 9 berths, which include 3 side berths and an additional berth between the side upper and side lower.
Passenger Refunds
Passengers who have pre-booked their tickets, whether online or over the counter, will be given a refund of the extra amount paid. This move is expected to benefit passengers who have already booked their tickets, and they will not have to bear the brunt of the fare reduction.
Bedding Availability
Along with the fare reduction, bedding will also be made available to passengers as before. This means that passengers travelling in AC-3 tier economy coaches will be provided with clean and comfortable bedding for a good night’s sleep.
Revenue from AC-3 Tier Economy Class
According to data, the Railways earned Rs 231 crore from the AC-3 tier economy class in the first year of its introduction. From April to August 2022, around 15 lakh people travelled in these coaches, generating earnings of Rs 177 crore. This shows that the AC-3 tier economy class is a profitable class for the Railways.
Conclusion
The fare reduction for AC-3 tier economy class tickets is a welcome move by the Indian Railways. This move is expected to benefit a large number of passengers who travel in AC-3 tier economy class coaches and make train travel more affordable for them. With this fare reduction, the Indian Railways is ensuring that train travel remains an accessible and affordable mode of transportation for every traveler.
