India is looking to expand the tourism industry by announcing relaxation in its fee structure and rules. To let more Chinese citizens visit the country, the government has simplified the tourist visa requirement. One of the major initiatives taken by the government is the reduction of fees. This is done in order to attract more travelers from China. Though, the initiative has obtained a mixed review in the country.
As per the press release held in Beijing in October, the maximum time limit of the visa has been extended to 5 years, as opposed to 1 year. The processing and application fee for visas has also been greatly reduced. The charges for a multiple-entry 1-year visa dropped to $40 from $80. The fee for a one-month single-entry visa is kept at $25. To promote tourism in the off-season in the period between April to June, tourists can choose to apply for a thirty-day e-visa at just $10.

These changes are made to “improve exchanges between Chinese and Indian people”. It is expected that more Chinese travelers will prefer India as a tourist destination. This updated visa policy will be exciting for Chinese travelers to discover the popular culture and cuisines in India.
This move of relaxing tourism regulations for Chinese in India was appreciated with great interest in Chinese social media. It has also become the most trending subject in Chinese social media. Though, a few people expressed their concerns over female safety and food hygiene in India.
India has been making efforts to entice more travelers from China for several years. In 2014, E-visas were introduced to encourage tourists on a global level. However, despite the efforts, the number of Chinese tourists in India did not increase to a lot of extents. As per the stats obtained from China Tourism Academy, nearly 150 million Chinese travelers made international trips in 2018, but only 250,000of them visited India.
