German flag carrier, Lufthansa Airlines, has recently revealed its plans to expand its operations in India with the introduction of two new routes. Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board & Head of Global Markets and Network, announced the expansion at a press conference in New Delhi. According to Hohmeister, the airline has a long-standing history in India and is committed to a long-lasting future in the country.
In this article, we will take a closer look at Lufthansa’s expansion plans, including new routes, aircraft details, and increased flights.
New Routes and Flight Details
Lufthansa is set to introduce two new routes in India, Munich to Bangalore and Frankfurt to Hyderabad. The Munich-Bangalore route will commence on November 3, 2023, and will operate three times a week. The flights from Frankfurt-Hyderabad will start in the winter, marking the Group’s first new routes in the Asia Pacific. Lufthansa aims to strengthen its position as the leading European airline group on the subcontinent with more than 50 weekly services to India.
Aircraft Details and Frequency Increase Plan
The Bengaluru-Munich route will be operated by Lufthansa’s Airbus A 350. The airline had earlier planned to start the service in 2020, but due to the pandemic, it had to be postponed. Lufthansa plans to increase the frequency of flights on the Bengaluru-Munich route to five times a week if there is a strong demand.
Increased Flights
Currently, Lufthansa operates 54 flights a week in India, but Hohmeister announced that the airline plans to increase that number to 56 by the end of June, with further expansion expected in the near future. “After adding more services, flights are expected to increase to over 60 per week,” he said. “Lufthansa Group has had a presence in the Indian market for more than 90 years”.
Lufthansa’s Future in India
Hohmeister concluded by expressing his optimism for the airline’s future in India. “I’m very convinced here in India,” he said. “We have a long history in India; therefore, we will also have a long-lasting future”.
