Ellora Caves, among the nation’s most significant historical landmarks, is set to be the first landmark in India to be equipped with a hydraulic lift. It is located in the Aurangabad district in Maharashtra and is an extremely popular UNESCO World Heritage Site. The information was recently announced by a top official from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Speaking to PTI, the superintendent archaeologist of the Aurangabad circle Milan Kumar Chauley said, “The ASI has been undertaking various initiatives to improve the Ellora Caves, located over a distance of 500 meters, more accessible to tourists. These projects are currently or are in the process of being approved or implemented.”
These stunning caves are about 30 kilometers away from Aurangabad. For those who aren’t aware, Ellora is among the biggest rock-cut temple complexes in the world, with 34 caves. The complex is home to Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain sculptures.
Cave number 16, also known as Kailash Cave, is quite famous. It is a two-story structure. Visitors must ascend a staircase or up a ramp, according to the police officer. While there’s a ramp and a staircase ramp, the ASI would like to put tiny lifts along both sides.
“There will not be any construction activities for installing the lifts. The mechanism will compactly cover 9 square feet, and people in wheelchairs can easily access the top floor.” According to the official.
When the installation is completed, Ellora will become the first World Heritage site in India to be equipped with a lift facility.
