The Indian Ministry of Tourism has identified ten cultural destinations in India that have been chosen for holistic development. These include the Kaziranga National Park in Assam and Morjim Beach in Goa. For this “holistic development” there is a separate item in the budget of the Government of India for the financial year 2018/2019 (Note: In India, the financial years are from April to the end of March).
Apart from the safari destination Kaziranga and the beach destination in Goa, mainly cultural heritage sites of India were selected for promotion. The circle of the illustrious Ten includes
- Delhi (Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun Tomb),
- Agra (Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri),
- Dholavira and Somnath in Gujarat,
- Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh,
- Hampi and Mahabalipuram in Karnataka,
- Amer Fort in Rajasthan and the
- Caves of Ajanta and Ellora in Maharashtra.
The Indian government has engaged a consultant to analyze what could be improved in relation to these destinations.
Even with the directly affected travel and hotel providers or other stakeholders, there should be consultations in advance, which should all be completed by March 31, 2019. The ten destinations are to be developed into first-class destinations. Among other things, this concerns issues such as transport links, sustainability or the competences of the providers.
A similar program is also available for five islands in the Andaman and Lakkadiven. This program is already relatively advanced in realization. In addition, the guidelines for the development of five special tourism zones are being developed. Once these guidelines are in place, Indian states can apply for funding. The best five proposals will be awarded.
