New Zealand has ended its Covid-19 pandemic rules, including the mandates for vaccines and mask-wearing rules, two years after they were first implemented.
In a weekly news conference, Premier Minister Jacinda Adern stated that it was time for the country to turn the page on its Covid-19 management system and live without the bizarre measures it used previously.
Ardern stated, “Finally, we take back control of our lives and futures rather than feeling like Covid decides for us.”
She said that for the first time in two years, we can now approach summer with the certainty New Zealanders need. This will help to drive more economic activity crucial to our economic recovery.
New Zealand resumes visa processing. International travelers are welcome to visit the borders.
International students and tourists will be able to enter the country after the borders are reopened. Jacinda Arden, Prime Minister, described it as an “enormous time” and said it was a staged process. Visitors will need proof of vaccination to enter the country, even though there are no quarantine requirements.
Except for healthcare and aged care facilities, all mask-wearing requirements were eliminated. The government stated that only Covid-19-positive individuals will need to be isolated for seven days and that household contacts do not have to.
Ardern stated that all government vaccine mandates would be scrapped by September 26th. He added that employers would decide whether to require employees to be vaccinated.
The government will remove all vaccination requirements for all incoming passengers and crew. New Zealand’s quick response to the pandemic and strict pandemic rules kept it relatively free of the virus up until last year.
After most of the population had been vaccinated, the government ended its zero-Covid policy. The virus has continued to spread since then. There have been approximately 1,950 deaths and 1.7 million confirmed cases of Covid-19.
