Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is nestled in the green Brahmagiri hills of Mananthavady, Wayanad, Kerala, 1740 meters above sea level. Accessible via a scenic 6 km trek from Thirunelli, it’s often referred to as the birds’ underworld (Pakshipathalam), echoing the legend of Garuda, the king of birds, presiding over this avian domain. The best time to visit is from October to January. The sanctuary is open from 7 am to 7 pm and on weekends and public holidays from 7 am to 4 pm. Pakshipathalam trekking trail, which starts near Thirunelli Temple, takes visitors through watchtowers, Garudapara rock, and Papanasini stream before descending to Pakshipathalam.
Entry Fee Information
The entry fee is ₹50 per person for Indian nationals and ₹200 per person for foreign nationals, with additional charges for a forest guide. The sanctuary is closed from February until April/May.

Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is about 52 km away from Wayanad. Visitors can reach the sanctuary by bus from Wayanad to Thirunelli Temple, followed by a trek. The nearest railway station is in Kozhikode, 120 km away, and the closest airport is Calicut International Airport, 130 km away. Alternatively, a taxi or cab can be booked for a comfortable ride to the sanctuary.
