Thailand will implement a new rule in April 2022 regarding foreign tourists. Foreign tourists will be charged 300 Baht, or $9, starting in April, according to the latest rules. In addition to Thailand being one of the biggest tourist destinations in Asia, the entry fee for foreign tourists will help Thailand recover from the effects of the pandemic.
The number of tourists arriving in Thailand last year was only 200000, as opposed to the 40 million expected in 2019.
A portion of this fee will go to assisting tourists, according to Yuthasak Supasorn, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Governor. As he explained, “At times, our insurance didn’t cover tourists … which led to us having to take care of them.”
Foreign tourists are now required to pay updated fees for COVID-related payments, such as for COVID tests, hotel accommodations or quarantine, as well as for insurance coverage for at least $50000 in COVID treatments.
In order to protect itself from the spread of the new variant, Thailand had recently suspended quarantine-free visas. Since April of this year, it will implement this fee, which has been in discussion for a long time.
In order to promote sustainable tourism, the Thai government will add a $9 fee to airline tickets. After two years of dismal inbound tourism, the country expects a tourism uptick this year. It is expected that Thailand will receive somewhere between 5 and 15 million foreign visitors this year.
