Ladakh’s Chisumle-Demchok Road is now the highest motorable road in the world when it crosses the Umling Pass. Its highest point is situated over 19,000 feet above sea level, making it a remarkable accomplishment. Several such roads have already been built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which boasts of connecting some of the toughest border areas and terrains in the country.
Take a look at these surprising facts about the Chisumle-Demchok Road:
#1. This 52-kilometer road in Ladakh, reputed to be the world’s highest motorable road, connects some of the most important parts of the region. At 19,300 feet, the 52-km long tarmac road in Eastern Ladakh crosses the Umlingla Pass, making it the world’s highest motorable road.
#2. The road is higher than Bolivia’s Uturuncu volcano road at 18,953 feet. The breathtaking high altitude of 19,300 feet makes this road in Ladakh a Guinness Book of World Records entry!
#3. There are many important towns in the Chumar sector of Eastern Ladakh that are connected to India by road.
#4. According to the authorities, it is higher than Everest Base Camp. This road is higher than even Mount Everest’s base camps, as the South Base Camp in Nepal is 17,598 feet high and Tibet’s North Base Camp is 16,900 feet.
#5. Additionally, this road surpasses the altitude of the Siachen Glacier, which is also believed to be the world’s highest, deadliest, and most costly battlefield.
#6. Since the region is very close to the Indo-China border, the road is an important alternative to the other direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok.
In August, the Ministry of Defense addressed the challenges of constructing a road in a harsh and challenging environment. During winter, the temperature almost dropped to -40 degrees Celcius and the oxygen level was almost half as high as it typically is in normal places.
..And we reached the last milestone over the Mighty Umling La Pass by constructing the World’s Highest motorable road.
