It’s good news for travelers planning a trip to Thailand in 2022. Thailand has announced a new quarantine-free travel policy for international travelers starting in February, according to the latest reports. After the program was suspended due to a rise in Omicron cases, officials in the know-how have stated that the kingdom’s tourism-dominated economy has suffered greatly since the numbers of visitors dropped to a trickle.
The Test and Go scheme will enable fully-vaccinated travelers to enter the country, and they will have to undergo COVID tests on their first and fifth days there. The statement was made by Taweesin Visanuyothin, a member of the COVID-19 task force.
Therefore, travelers will be required to stay in a hotel while waiting for their results, and they will be required to download a tracking app to ensure compliance. As an alternative to two weeks’ hotel quarantine, Thailand launched the said Test and Go scheme in November to boost its economic performance.
The program was suspended last month as the country reported rising cases of Omicron. With hospitalizations not spiking, the spokesperson added that the program could be resumed, but the authorities will monitor the situation. When the situation changes or more infections occur, the sandbox scheme will be adjusted.
According to the sandbox program, which was introduced last year, fully vaccinated visitors were permitted to spend seven nights in certain designated locations, such as the resort island of Phuket before they were allowed to visit other parts of Thailand.
Tourism Ministry estimates that 5 million foreign visitors will travel to Thailand in 2022, down from more than 40 million during the pre-pandemic period.
