History:
Kargil, a part of the Baltistan district of Ladakh until Indian independence on 15th August 1947, is a hub of diverse religious and linguistic communities. The first Kashmir war resulted in the Line of Control (LOC) splitting the Baltistan district, making Kargil a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Shimla agreement in 1971 brought a commitment to peace, but 1999 saw an unfortunate breach by Pakistani troops, leading to the Kargil war.
Tourist Attractions:
