The Mysore Kingdom was initially governed as a vassal state of the Vijayanagar Empire, ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty. Mysore became independent after the decline of the Vijayanagar Empire, and the region was ruled by Srirangapatna. Around 1761 and 1799, Mysore's influence passed into the hands of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The power was handed back to the Wodeyar family after Tipu Sultan died in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war. Mysore has several tourist attractions including palaces, museums, temples, gardens and more.
