75 Eco-Tourism And Sustainable Hubs To Be Built Along River Ganga

Ganga River, India

Around 75 sites along the banks of the Ganga will be developed as hubs of sustainable economic development and tourism, including river walks, homestays, biodiversity watching, village tours, jungle safaris, etc. As part of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), more than 26 sites have already become operational along rivers Gomati, Ganga, Chambal, Yamuna, and Hoogly, according to the Times of India. The Arth Ganga concept of the NMCG is designed to promote livelihood activities along the rivers Gomati, Ganga, Chambal, Yamuna, and Hoogly.

Asok Kumar, NMCG Director General, informed ToI that this initiative is part of the Arth Ganga concept launched by PM Narendra Modi in Kanpur in 2019.

This project aims to promote livelihood generation in the river basin by developing interconnected networks that act as economic hubs. The Ganga and its tributaries will be rejuvenated by involving local people in the project. Jalaj is a subsidiary project aiming to conserve biodiversity and maintain clean river ecosystems. Furthermore, it assists in developing local communities by providing them with sustainable livelihood training.

The initiative was launched virtually on August 16 in Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Uttar Pradesh has 11 sites, West Bengal has six, Bihar has five, Uttarakhand has two, and Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand each have one.

Each site has been assigned specific activities, and natural resources and local conditions have also been considered.
