As soon as possible, a ropeway will be constructed between Sonprayag and Kedarnath shrines in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand to facilitate pilgrimage. By the reports, the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has approved the construction of a ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath shrine in Rudraprayag district, which is likely to boost religious tourism.
According to reports, the 13km long Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway project, which will link Sonprayag to the Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath, will cost nearly INR 1200 crore. Currently, pilgrims can visit the shrine via helicopter services.
The state wildlife board approved these projects in June. Still, the final approval awaited the NBWL, as environmentalists strongly oppose such a move in the ecologically delicate Himalayas.
During the 70th meeting of the NBWL standing committee, which Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav chaired, the board’s final decision was taken along with other decisions that the NBWL’s apex committee also took.
A report by Yadav after the meeting stated that the meeting discussed proposals submitted by states and UTs for the use of lands in protected areas and eco-sensitive zones for drinking water supply, the construction of telecom towers, the construction of bridle tracks, and the installation of ropeways to facilitate pilgrims in challenging terrain.
He also noted that regarding the ropeway decision, it was recommended by the committee that it should be constructed to facilitate the travel of thousands of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath Dham during the Kedarnath Yatra.
