Located in Karnataka state, Bandipur National Park was once the Maharaja of Mysore hunting grounds. It was later established as a reserve under project tiger in 1974 and these wildlife-rich deciduous forests have since become a popular tourist attraction. It is 80 kilometers from Mysore en route Ooty which is a popular Tamil Nadu tourist destination. Because of a lot of wildlife injuries caused by speeding cars, a traffic ban has been implemented between 9 PM and 6 AM to ensure the safety of the animal population. Spread over 874 sq. km and full of a wide range of beautiful wildlife and various teak and sandalwood trees, this is the country's first Biosphere Reserve.
Neighbors with the sanctuaries Nagarhole and Wayanad Wildlife, and a few minutes away from the Mudumalai National Park, the park is home to several endangered species. The forest is the home for some animals including elephants, hornbills, deer's, sloth bears, pythons, panthers, etc. Bandipur National Park's second-highest Indian Tiger population. Park is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve making it Southern India's largest protected area and South Asia's largest Wild Elephants resident.
