Cherrapunji once noted as Sohra is a small township in the northeastern state named Meghalaya. It bears several Guinness World Records for the highest rainfall in the single year (905.5 inches of rain), and the most rainfall in a month (350 inches of rain). No wonder we call it the Wettest place on the earth. Cherrapunji located in the Khasi hills has dramatic weather conditions and receives both the Southwest and Northeast Monsoons. Monsoon clouds rise from the Bay of Bengal, drop water as they face the hilly terrains, to rise above them. Given the amount of moisture throughout the year, it naturally lushes green and rich in biodiversity.
Places to visit in Cherrapunji
- The remarkable double-decker living root bridge is one of its kind. Indigenous people of Cherrapunji are known for their fascinating skill of building bridges with the living roots of the trees. It takes about 10 to 15 years to establish such a unique yet natural architectural formation.
- Cherrapunji has a couple of mesmerizing waterfalls, two most renowned ones are the Nohkalikai Falls and the Nohsngithiang Falls, which are prominent as the Seven Sisters Falls.
- Just about 6km from the Cherrapunji is Mawsmai cave, formed out of limestones. These mystical caves adorned by specific types of flora and fauna is an attractive sight for archaeological buffs.
- Thangkharang Park is a serene place set about 12 km from Cherrapunji. It is near the Khoh Ramhah Rock from where you get a quaint view of Bangladesh. Adjoining the garden with a small bridge is a section which gives a picture-perfect view of the valley.

- The nearest Airport is at Shillong but has a low frequency of flights. Hence it is convenient to get a flight from Guwahati airport which is around 181km from Cherrapunji.
- Buses from Sohra market in Shillong are available, you can take a road trip from Shillong to Cherrapunji via a shared cab or local taxi.
- Guwahati railway station is the nearest station to Cherrapunji, which connects all the major cities of India.

Cherrapunji is well known for handicrafts, artefacts made of canes and bamboo. Have a taste of Meghalayan tea, which is a little smoother than the Assam teas. Spices like cinnamon, cultivated in and around the area, fills the market with their aroma. One should try their pure orange flower honey at least once!
