Nagarhole derives its name from Naga, meaning snake, and Hole means sea. The park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park situated in the district of Kodagu and Mysore. In India, Nagarhole Park is declared to be the thirty-seventh Tiger Reserve. Nagarhole considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three of the parks namely Bandipur, Mudumalai Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary are adjacent to the Nagarhole. Nagarhole is a southern storehouse with rich flora and fauna and is host to the National Park of Nagarhole, celebrated as one of the best wildlife parks as well as the Bandipur Bird Shrine. The cats to be seen in the park are Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Sloth Bear, Striped Hyena.
Around the national park are also spotted herbivores such as Elephants, Chital, Sambar Deer, and Barking Deer. You can witness your breath being taken away by the waterfalls in the area when you are not busy spotting Asian elephants, Indian Bison or beautiful birds all around the place. Nagarhole means' snake river' and derives its name from the river's unforgiving wild nature which flows through the forests. A visit to Nagarhole without a ride to the Brahmagiri Mountains and the Irpu Falls would be incomplete. The falls are created by the River Lakshman Tirtha. The locals say the river owes its source to Goddess Sita. The Goddess was thirsty when exiling with Ram and Laxman, and requested water to be drunk. The faithful Laxman hit the ground with an arrow and the river gushed out.
